Starmer Cabinet

Angela Rayner named deputy PM as Labour form government

Tom Tugendhat and Jeremy Hunt are top picks to replace Boris Johnson

Allies of Penny Mordaunt claim she is now the bookies’ favorite

Angela Rayner has been named deputy prime minister as Sir Keir Starmer assembles his cabinet as Labour form a government.

Ms Rayner, 43, was the only Muslim in the Shadow Cabinet and played a key role in liaising between MPs and Mr Starmer's office over Gaza.

She has been tipped for a top job in the new government and her appointment as deputy PM would be seen as a sign that Mr Starmer is determined to unite the party after a bitter leadership contest.

In the run-up to the election, Sir Keir remained tight-lipped about who would be part of his cabinet but did confirm that.

Ms Rayner has been filmed walking up Downing Street ahead of the announcement of Sir Keir Starmer's cabinet.
