Sensory Nerves Linked to Tumor Progression

Study Highlights Role of Sensory Nerves in Breast Cancer Metastasis

Recent studies have identified the presence of nerve cell markers in a wide range of cancers, including head and neck, breast, cervix, esophagus, colorectum, and pancreas. Researchers are now investigating the potential role of sensory nerves, which transmit information to the brain, in tumor progression.

In a breakthrough study, researchers have demonstrated that sensory nerves directly contribute to the metastasis of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). By correlating nerve markers with metastatic recurrence in breast cancer patients, they discovered that removing sensory nerves within breast tumors significantly reduced metastasis.

Furthermore, the study explored the relationship between various neurotransmitters and breast cancer cell growth. Researchers found that understanding the central role of neurotransmitters could lead to improved cancer treatments.
